Malabar Headland Western Track Proposal

Avid bushwalkers and Sunday afternoon strollers alike will this year enjoy a new 1.15km walking track connecting south Maroubra Beach with Malabar Beach. Known as the Malabar Headland Western Walking Track, it will comprise a boardwalk, steps and seating offering spectacular views over the Headland.

Construction is expected to start in mid-2017 and follows six years of planning and community consultation. The Randwick City Council project is a $1m investment in extending the Coastal Walkway and opening up green spaces that were previously inaccessible to the public.

Randwick City Mayor, Cr Noel D’Souza, believes the walking track will become a popular drawcard for locals and tourists alike. “Council is incredibly pleased that this beautiful stretch of coast will be returned, not just to the people of Malabar, but to the people of Sydney.

“The Western Walking Track forms part of Council’s coastal walkway project. This involves construction of a continuous path along our entire coastline, which is approximately 29km, between Clovelly in our north and La Perouse in the south.  We have progressively been working on small segments over the years to meet this objective.”

The Western Walking Track is located in an area of the headland that will not be impacted by the ANZAC Rifle Range shooting days. It will be open seven days a week and has easy, direct access via both Maroubra and Malabar beaches.

“The Headland is the last remaining tract of native bushland that exists in Sydney between the harbour and Botany Bay, and includes dramatic sandstone cliffs and places to watch for whales. We’re incredibly pleased to be able to preserve this green space and ensure that everyone has access to the kind of calm and serenity that only outdoor spaces can provide,” said Mayor D’Souza.

Council has undertaken extensive community consultation on the Western Walking Track proposal and has received overwhelming support from the community and also from NSW National Parks.

This project is funded by Randwick City Council and the NSW Government under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program.

Construction of the walking track is expected to finish late-2017.
