On the eve of National Recycling Week, Randwick City Council is proud to announce the Randwick Community Recycling Centre has expanded its service to now collect household problem waste for recycling, from gas bottles, used oil, batteries, paints to light bulbs.

With approximately 1,500 residents currently visiting the centre each month, the service is expected to see a 20% increase in visitors to the centre in the next year.

The additional services are a result of an upgrade of the centre through a grant from the Waste Less Recycle More funding program through the NSW Environmental Trust and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority, who will collect and recycle the waste once received by Randwick City Council.

In addition to the twice annual household chemical clean-up, Randwick City residents can now drop off household problem waste including paint, gas bottles and fire extinguishers, fluoro globes and tubes, household car batteries, cans and plastic containers, computers and televisions, whitegoods, motor and other oils as well as smoke detectors.

Mayor of Randwick, Noel D’Souza, says the expanded services will help reduce the incidence of problem wastes in household rubbish bins.

“For close 35 years, the Randwick Recycling Centre has been a central depot for recycling.  It’s the biggest in the eastern beaches and was one of the first centres in Sydney to take e-waste in 2013.

“We’re incredibly excited to see an expansion of services to include household problem waste.  Through better education and access to these services, we’re able to do our bit for the environment by collecting, recycling and disposing of household wastes appropriately, continuing to showcase Randwick City Council’s continued commitment to sustainability,” said Mayor D’Souza.
