Picture Perfect

Picture Perfect - Art Deco Architecture of Randwick City: 14 September-6 December 2013.

This exhibition of photography by local resident Alan Lloyd, showcasing the glorious Art Deco era architecture of our City fitted perfectly with the theme of History Week 2013, Picture This.

The exhibition was launched by then Mayor of Randwick City, Cr Tony Bowen, to a packed audience, many of whom were local residents who had lent Art Deco objects for the exhibition. Alan Lloyd spoke to the assembled crowd after the launch and light luncheon, explaining how he had been inspired to undertake the documentary project and what he had learnt along the way about Art Deco features and building techniques.

As a satellite promotion of the exhibition, library staff worked with Alan to create two Art Deco walks around Randwick and Coogee, taking in the Art Deco highlights of these two suburbs. Proving popular, the two walks were booked out and as a result, staff developed a self guided version of the walks for residents to download and undertake at their leisure. PDF versions of each walk are available here.

Even long time residents of Randwick City reported to library staff that they found themselves deliberately taking more time to appreciate the Art Deco architecture of our beautiful city.
