Tales of a Bygone Era

Tales of a Bygone Era - Randwick's Illuminated Stories: September - December 2011

Randwick City had a proud tradition of honouring its civic leaders with illuminated works as recognition of their community service. Randwick City Library and Randwick and District Historical Society joined forces to showcase the rich collection of illuminated materials honouring our past leaders.

Invitations, certificates, and bound and framed addresses were hand painted to create colourful and ornate tributes to important locals such as David Storey MP, William Laycock, and Thomas Gilderthorp. The exhibition included brief biographies of the local identities and explained what these Randwick personalities of the past had done to warrant the creation of these beautiful pieces. The exhibition inspired the family of the late Charles Molloy, former Mayor of Randwick and local car salesman, to donate his illuminated address to the Randwick City Library Service for future generations to be able to enjoy.

The exhibition was launched by Cr. Paul Tracey during History Week 2011.
