Koojay Corroboree

Fri 24 May 2019 - Fri 24 May 2019

10 am - 12.30 pm

Location
Coogee Beach

Council, in conjunction with the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council, holds the annual Koojay Corroboree on Coogee Beach to launch Reconciliation Week.

The free event will include performances from Doonooch Dancers, The Glen Dancers, Warada Dancers from Soldiers Settlement Public School, Chifley Dance Group and Chifley Didge Kids.

The sands of Coogee Beach will come to life as Aboriginal Dancers perform customary and contemporary dance in a customary Corroboree, an event where Australia’s first people interact with the Dreamtime through dance and music. The Koojay Corroboree will feature live performances, traditional fire and cultural activities. Activities include a boomerang masterclass, didgeridoo playing workshop, basket weaving, jewellery making, shell art workshop and traditional face painting.

National Reconciliation Week celebrates the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and all other Australians, it is also a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
