Greens Councillor Philipa Veitch has been re-elected Deputy Mayor of Randwick.

The West Ward Councillor was elected to the position by her Councillor peers at a meeting of Randwick Council held tonight Tuesday 22 September 2020 at the Prince Henry Centre in Little Bay.

The election was a three-way contest between sitting Deputy Veitch, Liberal Councillor Harry Stavrinos and Independent Councillor Carlos Da Rocha. Veitch secured the position with a majority vote from the five Labor and three Greens Councillors.

Deputy Mayor Veitch was first elected to Randwick Council in 2017 and elected Deputy in 2019. She will serve as deputy to Randwick Mayor Danny Said for the next 12 months with Local Government elections scheduled for 4 September 2021.

Elections were originally scheduled for September 2020 but were deferred for 12 months due to COVID-19. The deferral automatically extends Randwick Mayor Danny Said’s term for another 12 months as Mayors are elected for two-year terms under under the Local Government Act. Mayor Said was elected Mayor in September 2019.

Returning Deputy Mayor Philipa Veitch thanked her fellow Councillors: “I’d like to thank everybody for your kind words. This is a moment I will treasure and it’s with heartfelt thanks that I acknowledge the support of my Greens colleagues and other Councillors. It’s been a challenging time for residents and businesses and I look forward to continuing to work to help our community over the next 12 months.”

Randwick Mayor Danny Said congratulated Cr Veitch on her reappointment.

“The past 12 months has been a difficult time for the community and for Council. Having stability on the Council will assist us in continuing our important work to support the community and local businesses recover from COVID-19. I am looking forward to continuing to work with Cr Veitch,” says Mayor Said.
