Outdoor gym in Neptune Park, Coogee

A new outdoor gym in Coogee has opened to the public this month (February 2021) providing a free and healthy exercise opportunity along the popular Coastal Walkway.

Located in Neptune Park on the corner of Neptune Street and Wolseley Road, the Randwick Council built gym provides a variety of exercise equipment to suit people of all ages.

Council is also planting 3,000 low-lying native shrubs in the park creating a natural habitat to attract native birds and insects.

In 2019 a consultation was undertaken to determine what the community would like to see happen at the park. When surveyed, one in two respondents said they didn't visit the park because there was "nothing there". Others cited said the park looked unappealing and lacked trees and shade. Eighty-four per cent of respondents thought the park should be improved and there was support for planting more native trees and shrubs and building an outdoor gym.

Additionally, the community agreed a native garden would add some interest to the park as well as provide a haven for small native birds.

Work began on the gym in early 2021.

This is Randwick Council’s sixth outdoor gym with gyms also located at Maroubra Beach, Kensington Park, Frenchmans Bay, Burrows Park Clovelly and Chifley Sports Reserve. A seventh outdoor gym is planned for Malabar Beach.
