The iconic Coogee Carols and Coogee Sparkles NYE fireworks events will not proceed this year after Randwick Council made the tough decision to cancel the events to protect the health and wellbeing of the community.

The matter was debated at the Council’s Meeting last night, 27 October 2020 where Council resolved instead to deliver a bolstered program of Christmas activations across Randwick City’s town centres and beaches.

Randwick Mayor Danny Said says cancelling the iconic events which attract tens of thousands of people was a tough decision, but ultimately public health and safety is most important.

“The health and wellbeing of our community is our prime concern and ultimately we could not guarantee large crowds could gather safely inline with NSW Public Health Orders given the continued threat of COVID-19.

“We’re very disappointed to have to make this decision, but I hope people will understand the reason for it. Our enhanced program of Christmas activations will bring a bit of a joy and fun in what’s been a tough year and encourage people to stay local and shop local this festive season,” says Mayor Said.

Instead of the usual NYE fireworks and carols, Council will deliver an expanded program of Christmas activities designed to bring joy, festive cheer and hope in a COVID-safe way.

The Christmas activities will include:

Further details of the Christmas program will be announced in coming weeks.
