As cycling becomes a more popular way to get around our City, we’re always looking for ways to improve safety for bike riders. We were approached by members of our local bike user group, BIKEeast, to create a safer connection to the beach. This contra-flow bike path on Bream Street between Arden and Beach streets was proposed, reviewed and approved by Council.

Why this street?
This bike route has been established to allow east-bound bike riders to travel along Bream Street and cross over Arden Street (when it’s safe to do so), and continue against the one-way traffic to Beach Street.

Beach Street is a popular north/south route for bike riders rather than using Arden Street, which is narrower and busier. This part of Bream street is a direct link to Beach Street and means riders don’t have to divert from Bream Street and turn right down to Dolphin Street (and through the pedestrian area) or left, uphill along Arden street towards Arcadia street, where it can be narrow and busy.

What does it mean for drivers in the area?
Regular drivers of this road should now expect to see bike riders travelling east bound on this part of Bream Street. Drivers will also need to turn more carefully onto Bream Street heading west from Beach Street and look for bike riders who are using the clearly marked green lane.

The new bike path will also require extra care from residents exiting from their garages in this section of Bream Street, as they will need to look both directions both for cars, pedestrians and now bike users, too.
