Coogee Beach, playgrounds, ocean pools, basketball courts and skateparks in Randwick City will close indefinitely from Saturday 28 March 2020 as part of a raft of new measures by Randwick Council to reduce public gatherings and help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Coogee Beach, which continues to experience large numbers of visitors, will be closed until further notice, while other Randwick City beaches including Clovelly and Maroubra will remain open and be monitored daily. If the number of people at the beach exceeds or is expected to exceed 500, they will also be closed.

All eight ocean pools in Randwick City will also close.

Randwick Council has taken the proactive measure to close the facilities as part of its commitment to community safety.

“We are still seeing large numbers of people visiting Coogee Beach and surrounds,” explains Mayor Said. “It’s likely the full closure of Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte beaches is contributing to the increased attendance at Coogee.

“These closures are designed to encourage people to stay at home. Now’s not the time to be visiting public spaces, especially with children,” explains Mayor Danny Said. “Let’s all do our bit to reduce the spread and limit the impact of the coronavirus.”

The ocean pools that will close from Saturday 28 March 2020 are:

  • Wylies Baths, Coogee
  • McIver’s Ladies Baths, Coogee
  • The Geoff James Pool, Clovelly
  • Ross Jones Memorial Pool, Coogee
  • Giles Baths, Coogee
  • Ivor Rowe Rockpool, Coogee
  • Mahon Pool, Maroubra
  • Malabar Ocean Pool, Malabar

Randwick Council’s 57 outdoor playgrounds will all close, as will the Chifley Skate Park and Maroubra Skate Park, the Heffron Pedal Park and all Randwick City’s outdoor basketball courts. Signage is being installed at the locations.
