Smart bins are being trialled at La Perouse.

Smart public litter bins that compact waste using solar power and send alerts when full have been installed at La Perouse today, 18 January 2019, as part of a Randwick City Council trial program.

The smart bins can hold up to eight times the volume of a normal public litter bin due to their internal compaction technology.

Acting Randwick Mayor Councillor Danny Said says the new technology could improve efficiencies and save costs.

“In peak summer periods our litter bins at our popular beachside locations fill up quickly. These new bins hold more rubbish as well as being more efficient for staff to service.

“The automatic alert system means we can send crews to empty the bins as required during busy times but deploy staff elsewhere if the bins aren’t full,” the Acting Mayor said.

The trial program is part of Randwick City Council’s Smart Cities Strategy and Waste Management Strategy.

Three bins have been installed on The Loop Road at La Perouse near the walkway to Bare Island.

The bins contain a 60W solar panel that charges a battery which can operate for up to four weeks regardless of weather. The bins are include intelligent safety sensors as well as fire prevention features.

If the trial is successful, more bins could be rolled out and also collect recyclable material and offer free wifi for passers-by.
