Remediation works will commence from Monday 17 September 2018 at Jack Vanny Reserve in Maroubra to safely remove asbestos contamination from the park.

A section of the park has been closed to public access since December 2017 after asbestos containing fragments were found by a member of the public.

Randwick Council and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority have been working cooperatively to test the extent of contamination and to develop a remediation plan.

Council has engaged an accredited contaminant removalist specialist - RMA Contracting Pty Ltd – to remediate the reserve with works to be overseen by Council and an expert environmental consultancy firm.

The works include but are not limited to the bulk excavation and offsite disposal of the contaminated soil, installation of a membrane barrier, reinstatement of clean fill, installation of new pathway, irrigation and revegetation. Some remediation works by hand will also take place.

Environmental controls including air monitoring, noise, erosion and dust controls will be used to mitigate any adverse impacts on the surrounding community.

Dust suppression systems will include a temporary irrigation system located along the perimeter of the site area as well as the use of water carts and mains water to target work areas during soil removal and loading.

Work will take place Monday to Friday 7am to 3.30pm and is expected to be complete in November 2018.
