Jacqueline du Pre sculpture

Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey will unveil a bronze statue of renowned cellist Jacqueline du Pré, OBE, at Kensington Park on Sunday 23 September 2018. The statue will be unveiled at 12.30pm as part of Council’s Let’s Chat free community BBQ taking place from 11am to 1pm.

The statue, created by Croatian sculptor Drago Marin Cherina, was a generous gift to Randwick City Council from Music & Opera Singers Trust. It will be installed in a grassed area in front of the Kingsford Community Centre, to become a focal point of peace and serenity for all visitors.

“This bronze sculpture will strengthen the artistic and cultural life of Kensington and will be a welcome addition to the green space of the community centre,” said Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey. “Art like this can have a powerful effect on people and can help to educate, inspire and stimulate creativity.

“I also hope that viewing this sculpture and coming to understand the legacy of Jacqueline de Pré will encourage any budding classical musicians we may have in Randwick City to keep pursuing their passion.”

Jaqueline du Pré was a gifted English cellist who after a stellar career wowing audiences worldwide, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was only 26 years old. She was famed for her masterful interpretations and her passionate style of playing and throughout the 1960s achieved mainstream popularity, even outside the circles of classical music.

A book, film and play have all been written about her life, talent and impact on the world of classical music.
