A proposed 2.8km separated cycleway connecting Kingsford to Centennial Park is one step closer after Randwick City Council recently endorsed a concept plan following extensive community consultation.

The proposed walking and cycling improvements are part of the Council’s cycle strategy to increase the rate of cycling, provide better cycling infrastructure and to better connect with the Kingsford light rail terminus and the existing cycleway around Centennial Park. Additional pedestrian crossings and streetscape upgrades will further enhance the local street environment.

Prior to implementation, the Council will also conduct a review of the resident parking scheme in the Doncaster Avenue area with the intent to prioritise street parking for local residents while providing sufficient short term drop-off parking around Kensington Public School.

The project includes safer pedestrian crossings, new trees and plants, enhanced streetscapes, improved lighting, traffic calming and a cycleway separated from moving traffic. This will create a safer and more convenient transport option for local residents, parents and kids, students and commuters for a range of local activities.

The project was publicly exhibited from 25 May to 2 July 2018 and received more than 400 submissions with the majority (approximately 70 per cent) supportive.

Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey said the project will now move to the detailed design phase and Council will seek funding from the RMS for construction.

“When I became Mayor in September last year I committed to improving cycling within Randwick City. I’m very pleased that this project is progressing well and the community has largely supported the plan.

“This project will deliver an enhanced streetscape, increased local amenity and safer cycling infrastructure to get more people on bikes for everyday trips,” Mayor Shurey said.
