Randwick Councillors met on Tuesday 16 October 2018 for an Ordinary Council Meeting. The following is a summary of some of the items.

Environment Levy

Community consultation will begin in November to inform and gauge the level of community support for the continuation of Council’s environment levy, which has funded Sustaining our City initiatives for the past 14 years. The levy has delivered initiatives such as the annual Eco-Living Expo, solar panels on Council buildings, Gross Pollutant Traps to improve water quality at beaches, stormwater re-use and the extension of our coastal walkway.

Support for residents in Randwick hospital redevelopment precinct

Randwick Council will once again write to Health Minister Brad Hazzard requesting that residents in Eurimbla Avenue, Botany Street and Magill Street be allowed to vacate their homes before demolition work commences. The NSW Government is acquiring 88 homes to make way for a $720M expansion of the hospital. There are concerns that demolition work – including removal of asbestos is being carried out before all families have relocated.

Alcohol Restrictions Munda Street Reserve

Drinking from sundown to sun up will be banned at this neighbourhood park in Randwick in order to increase safety and reduce alcohol-related incidences occurring at night.

Council calls for halt to small cell mobile phone facilities

In response to community concerns about the health ramifications of small cell mobile phone facilities, Randwick Council will lobby the Federal Government to delay the roll out of future small cell mobile facilities. Randwick City Council will seek to heritage list Anzac Parade to recognise the heritage and historical significance of remembrance corridor. Named in 1917, Anzac Parade features dozens of significant war memorials and was a major assembly area for WWI soldiers who marched to Sydney Harbour to board ships destined for the war in Europe.

Donation to Indonesian disaster relief fund

In the wake of the recent devastating earthquakes that hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in September, killing more than 400 people and injuring hundreds more, Council will make a donation to a relief fund set up by the National Board for Disaster Management. The $5,000 donation will provide emergency aid relief to the people of Indonesia.

Frisbee and pro surfing events at Maroubra Beach

Maroubra Beach has long been a hotspot for sporting competitions. Ultimate Australia will hold their national team selection camp at Maroubra Beach in the lead up to sending teams to the Asia-Oceanic Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Japan next year. In January 2019, Surfing NSW will hold Carve Pro, part of the NSW Pro Surf Series, at Maroubra Beach. Council has waived beach hire fees for both groups, and provided a one-off grant of $15,000 to Surfing NSW to assist with their event.
