A popular household composting program, started by Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra Councils has won a prestigious NSW Green Globe Awards announced last night 19 October 2017.

Created in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in 2010, Compost Revolution is an innovative online education website helping households recycle food scraps into soil and fertiliser.

The digital platform provides residents with free online tutorials and streamlined and heavily discounted ordering of worm farms and compost bins.

Provided to other councils by social venture Revolution Apps, Compost Revolution is now a national success with 37 councils and over 26,000 households involved Australia-wide.

Overall, the program has helped divert 5,300 tonnes of food waste from landfill, avoid 10,070 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, and saved councils $1.3 million in landfill costs.

Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey congratulated everybody involved in the program.

"It's fantastic to see a program started locally in the eastern suburbs receive such prestigious recognition.

"In Randwick City alone, the program has helped divert an estimated 2,042 tonnes of food waste out of landfill saving approximately $450,000 in waste disposal charges.

"The real joy for the project I believe is families taking ownership of their food waste and taking positive steps to reduce waste," Mayor Shurey said.

Compost Revolution is also a finalist in the National Banksia Environmental Awards to be announced on 1 November 2017. For more information and to order your worm farm or composting kit, visit compostrevolution.com.au.
