Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey has today praised the decisive action from police in shutting down a drunken beach party of 3,000 backpackers at Little Bay Beach on Christmas Day.

A crowd of up to 3,000 backpackers descended on the quaint eastern suburbs beach mid afternoon on Christmas Day drinking and partying on the alcohol-free beach.

“Police were onsite almost immediately and took quick and decisive action to prevent the situation from getting out of control,” Mayor Shurey said.

“The police response shut down the party very quickly and helped prevent any serious accidents or major injuries amongst the highly intoxicated revellers.

“I condemn the behaviour of those backpackers who attacked and assaulted police by throwing bottles.” Mayor Shurey said.

Council workers were onsite with police and helped cleanup the beach, streets and nearby reserves. It took five Randwick Council workers almost three hours to clear about 40 bags of rubbish including hundreds of bottles and cans.

Alcohol is not permitted at any beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and it is also prohibited at many beachside parks and reserves.
