World Record Thong Race

Des Renford Leisure Centre (DRLC) is calling on Randwick City residents to sprint, run or stroll one kilometre in thong sandals for a good cause on Sunday 16 October 2016.

The World’s Biggest Thong Sandal Race is part of the Des Renford Family Gala Day, raising money for the Victor Chang Heart Institute.

Australia claimed the Guinness World Record for the Biggest Thong Sandal Race in 2012 with just 362 participants, but the event’s popularity saw the USA nab the current record with 805 participants in 2015.

Mayor of Randwick, Noel D’Souza, has high hopes for Australia claiming back the record and is encouraging everyone to come along for a great cause.

“There is nothing better than knowing you’re making a difference and contributing to a worthwhile cause – and to give back through a fun event such as this, makes it even better.

“Bring your family and friends along for day of fun and laughter as we steal back the record and claim victory for Australia!” said Mayor D’Souza.

Entry to the race is $10 per person and includes a pair of thong sandals, a participation medal and entry to the Gala Day with bumper boats, a petting zoo, DRLC’s famous giant pool inflatable and much more.

All proceeds will go to The Des Renford Chair of Heart Research held by The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
