Randwick City Council is working with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to return public access to Malabar Headland with a new coastal walkway connecting South Maroubra Beach and Malabar Beach.

The proposed 1km walkway will offer stunning views across Malabar Headland to Maroubra Bay and will be the first public access to the newly declared Malabar Headland National Park in 150 years.

Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza said the proposed walking track will go through the western part of the headland and has been designed to minimise impact to the natural environment.

“In addition to breathtaking coastline, Malabar Headland is home to some of the last remnants of the endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub and 283 documented plant species.

“Our staff have worked closely with landscape designers, NPWS and the community to prepare draft designs that consider the sensitive ecology of the area and protect the amenity of nearby homes,” said Mayor D’Souza.

The proposed walkway will consist of a new 1500mm wide boardwalk constructed of fibreglass, stainless steel and timber with and ample seating and viewing areas.

Council is also developing longer term plans for a connecting walkway through the eastern part of the headland following the coastline which will provide a 4km loop. However these plans are subject to the Commonwealth and State Governments resolving issues with risk and safety in this area.
