Storm Damage to Coogee Surf Club - June 2016

Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza said clean-up operations across Randwick City are in full swing with dozens of Council staff cleaning up beaches, buildings and parks damaged by the weekend’s weather.

Clean-up along the hard-hit Coogee Beach area is progressing well, with large earth moving equipment having relocated the excess sand over the past 24 hours. Both Maroubra and Coogee Beaches remain closed due to dangerous surf conditions.

NSW Fire and Rescue had five teams from across the region on site to help ensure the safety of Coogee Surf Club after the king tide flooded the club and took out one of the walls.

Mayor D’Souza commended the many people involved in the clean-up efforts and acknowledged their tremendous work.

“Coogee Beach is the crown in Randwick City and it’s devastating to see the destruction that has occurred due to the storm.  But what inspires me is the hard work of the SES, NSW Fire & Rescue, NSW Police, Council Workers, Lifeguards and members of the community who are all pitching in to get the beach back up and running.

“There’s a lot of work to be done throughout Randwick City, with many areas affected. I ask the public to remain patient while we continue to assess the situation and clean-up our city,” said Mayor D’Souza.
