Each year we come together as a community to celebrate and reflect on what it means to be Australian.

To me, Australia Day is a celebration of our nations diverse society and landscape. This great land of ours holds a special place in my heart. At 11 years of age, my family immigrated to Australia from a Portuguese community in southern India. This country and its beautiful people welcomed my family with open arms and allowed us to be part of their lives and community.

We have more than 100 national or ethnic groups in our city, and as Mayor of Randwick I am immensely proud to be part of a community that welcomes diversity and celebrates our differences.

I encourage everyone to join me at Randwick City Council’s Australia Day celebrations at the Prince Henry Centre in Little Bay and Coogee Beach. To ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable day for everyone, Council is supporting NSW Police in enforcing a strict alcohol ban at Coogee and Clovelly beaches, and surrounding beachside areas.

I wish you a safe and happy Australia Day.
