It is now compulsory to wear a lifejacket while rock fishing along the Randwick City coastline with new legislation coming into effect today, 1 December 2016.

There is a 12-month moratorium on fines. The trial will be enforced by officers from Randwick City Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Department of Primary Industries and the NSW Police Force, who will warn rock fishers in the area not wearing a life jacket.

Today also marks the start of a new statewide education campaign targeting culturally and linguistically diverse communities about the dangers of rock fishing and encouraging the use of a life jacket.

As always, rock fishers are encouraged to think about their safety while rock fishing, not only by wearing a mandatory life jacket, but also appropriate clothing and footwear as well as checking the weather and surf conditions before venturing out, never fishing alone and ensuring someone always knows where you are.

Transport for NSW’s Old4New van will visit popular rock fishing areas in the area throughout the summer to offer discounted life jackets to rock fishers and provide safety information.
