Randwick Mayor Ted Seng has today welcomed a decision by Transport Minister Andrew Constance to relocate the proposed Randwick light rail terminal from High Cross Park into a new High Street plaza.

The decision effectively saves High Cross Park and creates a light rail stop closer to the Sydney Children’s Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital.

“This is an excellent decision by the NSW Government and they are to be commended,” Mayor Seng said.

“Well done to the Minister and the light rail team – they have listened to the community, undertaken a methodical assessment of the pros and cons and shown a considered and best-practice approach by modifying the plans to deliver a better customer experience for commuters, residents and shoppers.

“Responsive, considered and progressive is what I’d call it.”

The amendment to the NSW Government’s $2.1B CBD and South East Light Rail project will protect High Cross Park and its 90-year-old war memorial, save trees, reduce parking loss and reduce construction costs.

“Importantly the change provides an opportunity to create a new public transport and pedestrian plaza at the intersection of High, Avoca and Belmore integrated with the Randwick town centre,” Mayor Seng said.

“I also want to acknowledge the outstanding work of our local MP Bruce Notley-Smith who championed this issue on behalf of the community.”
