Council, Mayor's Messages

IPART has assessed Randwick and Waverley’s joint merger proposal as ‘fit’. This is great news for our residents, ratepayers, staff and combined local communities and I am pleased to see all our hard work and leadership has paid off.

We listened to our community, who clearly told us earlier this year that they value our eastern beaches identity and strongly oppose becoming part of a global city council with the City of Sydney, as originally proposed by the Independent Local Government Review Panel.

Merging with Waverley Council will protect us from the threat of a global city and further unite our eastern beaches community and deliver cost savings of $103M in the first 10 years alone. This is money we can directly invest into extra services for our residents.

As we approach this impending change, it gives me comfort to know that our Councillors had the vision to protect the employment conditions for our staff with five years job security should amalgamations occur.

Randwick City is in a good, strong position to embrace this change. I’m proud of the proactive and responsible stance our Council has taken on the issue, and I am even more pleased to see that the IPART and the NSW Government support our approach.

Today’s announcement paves the way for a strong, eastern beaches council and I thank the NSW Government for their swift release of IPART’s findings.
