Update 23/1/15

Following the news that the Government will not sell or develop Malabar Headland, Randwick Acting Mayor Anthony Andrews said:

"I welcome the response from Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt that Malabar Headland will not be sold or developed and 'will remain public land forever'. Randwick City Council now looks forward to the Federal Government endorsing and allowing us access to complete a Coastal Walkway extension on the western side of the headland to link Maroubra and Malabar Beaches. This is a critical missing link in Sydney's iconic Coastal Walkway which stretches from Bondi to La Perouse."

Randwick Council's Acting Mayor Councillor Anthony Andrews has called on the Federal Government to come clean over its plans for the redevelopment of the Malabar Headland site.

The Sydney Morning Herald today published details of a consultant's report commissioned by the Federal Department of Finance which suggested 48 hectares or a third of the headland could be sold to developers for mixed use development.

"Randwick Council has been campaigning for many years to return Malabar Headland to public ownership," Acting Mayor Andrews said.

"The whole site should be made into parklands for the enjoyment of the broader community, not developed for the commercial gain of the government and the few who can afford to live there.

"We have something special here and an opportunity to create a legacy for our children just like our forefathers did with Hyde Park and Centennial Park.

"Malabar Headland is the last remaining headland wilderness site between Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay. It links two of Sydney's best beaches - Maroubra and Malabar.

"Randwick Council is close to finalising plans for an extension of the famous Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walkway which would see the walk extended south of Maroubra through the western portion of the headland. We also have longer-term plans for a 4km loop around  the headland.

"I call on the Federal Government to conduct a thorough and open consultation and understand what the community wants for this important site," Acting Mayor Andrews said.
