Lifeguards

This week officially marks the start of the summer beach patrol season for Randwick City Lifeguards - the men and women responsible for our safety on Coogee, Maroubra and Clovelly Beaches.

We are so lucky in Randwick City to have glorious beaches to enjoy, and 32 of the most qualified and experienced lifeguards in Australia. Last summer these Lifeguards rescued 368 people from the water, treated thousands with first aid, and moved a staggering 19,000 people out of dangerous areas on our beaches. Their efforts were nothing short of heroic.

But, remember, swimming at the beach can still be dangerous, and it is everyone's responsibility to act safely. Always swim between the flags, avoid swimming alone and swim only at patrolled beaches during patrolled hours.

I would like to thank our Lifeguards for their professionalism and ongoing commitment to their work. Our beaches wouldn't be worldclass without them.

I'd also like to thank the many local volunteer Surf Life Savers, who support our Lifeguards, during the busy weekend and school holiday periods. They provide a valuable community service, especially during summer period.

Surf Lifesaving clubs in our area are currently looking for more volunteers, so I'd encourage any interested resident to contact the clubs and find out just how rewarding this work can be.

Let's all enjoy a warm, safe summer this year.
