Fit For The Future

Last week, the NSW Government announced the "Fit for the Future" package relating to local government reform in NSW.

The package is a $1 billion program aimed at making local government in NSW stronger and financially sustainable in the long term, and to help deliver housing, jobs and infrastructure such as better roads, footpaths and sporting fields.

I am proud to say Randwick City Council is financially strong and sustainable with no debt, a balanced budget and a healthy program of works and upgrades. However, I understand that more than one-third of the State's councils are facing financial problems - losing more than $1 million a day.

Having served as Mayor for two years and as a Councillor for 10 years, I understand the important contribution that local government makes to local communities. It is critical that we strengthen and enhance local government so that it continues to be an effective provider of local services and adequately represents the interests of the community. We need local government reform in NSW.

Randwick City Council's position is that non voluntarily amalgamations are not supported.

I have drafted a Mayoral Minute to be considered at this month's Council meeting, where I am proposing that Council conduct extensive community consultation over the next few months in relation to this package.

Following community consultation we will prepare our submission to the NSW Government's proposal.
