Randwick City Lifeguards are pleading with rock fishers to not fish during the next few days ahead of a six metre swell heading for Sydney's eastern coastline this afternoon.
Following the tragic death of a rock fisherman at Maroubra over the weekend, Council Lifeguards from Maroubra and Coogee have warned the conditions expected over the next two days are simply too dangerous for any rock fisher, no matter how experienced or cautious they are.
Randwick Mayor Scott Nash said Council's Lifeguards are concerned for rock fishers and are advising them not to take any chances.
"It's just not worth it," he said.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the fisherman lost on Sunday," Mayor Nash said. "Sadly, there have now been seven deaths since September 2011 along the coastline from Coogee to La Perouse including Maroubra, Malabar and Little Bay.
"Some say this is the most treacherous stretch of land for rock fishing in Australia and with the weather conditions worsening over the next few days, I hope all rock fishers take the Lifeguard's advice and stay away."
Randwick City Council reminds rock fishers of these important tips, no matter what the weather.
- Wear a Life Jacket.
- Never fish by yourself.
- Inform others of your plans.
- Wear light clothing.
- Wear appropriate footwear.
- Carry safety gear.
- Never fish in exposed areas during rough or large seas.
- Plan an escape route in case you are washed in.
- Stay alert.
- Ask for advice from locals who know the area.
- Do not jump in if someone is washed into the water.
