Sydney's White Ribbon Walk 2014

Sydney's fourth annual White Ribbon Walk was held this morning as part of national White Ribbon Day, which coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, as declared by the United Nations.

The Walk, a joint initiative between Randwick City Council and NSW Police, aims to unite the community in their commitment to ending violence against women.

In Australia, at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner. One in three Australian women over the age of 15 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence.

The Walk kicked off at 7.30am at High Cross Park in Randwick and ended at Coogee Beach with a mass oath ceremony.

Led by the NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione, participants of Sydney's White Ribbon Walk vowed:

"Never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women."

He was joined by His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC, Mayor of Randwick Ted Seng, Superintendent Gavin Dengate, NSW Minister for Planning and Minister for Women Pru Goward, sporting legends Simon Poidevin, Mario Fenech, Mike Whitney and Gary Ella, local State MPs Michael Daley and Bruce Notley-Smith, and Randwick City Councillors, Anthony Andrews, Kiel Smith, Brendan Roberts, Tony Bowen, Harry Stavrinos, Greg Moore and Geoff Stevenson.

The symbolic event raises awareness and funds for White Ribbon Australia.
