Light rail

Council has recently conducted an online survey of local residents to gauge initial community thoughts on our proposal to build a multi-storey car park at Kingsford roundabout. The car park is planned to alleviate the loss of parking associated with the construction of the CBD and South East Light Rail project.

This proposal is one part of Council's endorsed Light Rail Support Plan that aims to further integrate and improve the state government's light rail project in Randwick City.

The results of the preliminary survey indicate that 62 per cent of respondents already find it difficult, on some level, to find a car park in this area and 68 per cent believe that Council should pursue acquiring the land on Rainbow Street, Kingsford to build a multi-story car park.

This light rail project will bring with it many benefits to our area - not just for our residents and businesses - but for the millions who travel to our hospitals, the University of NSW and Royal Randwick Racecourse – but I acknowledge there are still some challenges ahead. So, as Transport for NSW has already commenced their preliminary works to get the project started, as a responsible Council, we need to do what we can to help make this great project even better for our local residents.

Pleasingly, the results of this initial survey indicate that we are on the right track to pursue this proposal to help address the need for parking solutions in the area.
