Randwick City Council - Mayor's message - 27 May 2014

This week is National Reconciliation Week, which focuses on building stronger relationships between the broad Australian community and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in an effort to create positive change and make a difference.

Yesterday, Randwick City Council installed 12,000 'hands' on Bare Island in our Sea of Hands exhibit to make a visual statement to all of Sydney on the importance of reconciliation.

I was joined by the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Marie Bashir AC CVO, NRL and AFL stars Greg Inglis, Michael O'Loughlin, Nathan Merritt and Rhys Wesser, as well as Father Chris Riley and Australian of the Year, Adam Goodes.

It was great to see hundreds of local community members attend and show their support for the event. In a unique effort to reach even more people, our Sea of Hands exhibit is under a main flight path and we hope it will be visible from the skies for the rest of the week.

Bare Island will also be open to the public again this Sunday, 1 June, where people can view the exhibit and also attend the First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Black Markets.
