Randwick City Council - Mayor's message - 17 June 2014

When I was elected to Randwick City Council in 2004, one of the first major decisions I and other Councillors made was to support the introduction of a new 5 year 'Sustaining Our City' program which included a range of environmental initiatives, projects and programs. In 2009, Council supported the continuation of the program for a further 5 years to the end of June 2014.

Our 'Sustaining Our City' program has been an overwhelming success, and it's very popular with local residents.  We're saving 500 million litres of water and almost $1 million in water charges each year.  It made perfect sense for Council to continue the program for a further 5 years from 2014 to 2019.  I'm pleased to say that the $20.37 million program will be included in Council's budgets over the next 5 years, starting with this year's budget.

I'm very passionate about protecting our local environment. During the past decade, the program has helped Council deliver award-winning programs across Randwick City including upgrades to the Coastal Walkway in Coogee, Maroubra, La Perouse and Clovelly, solar panels on community buildings, stormwater harvesting in local parks, innovative technologies to improve water quality at our beaches, the annual Eco-Living Fair and environmental programs in local schools.

Upcoming projects include installing gross pollutant traps to capture pollution before it enters the ocean, the completion of future stages of the popular Coastal Walkway, community education programs and cycleway upgrades.  I want to thank the local community for supporting these great initiatives.
