Randwick City Council - Mayor's message - 29 July 2014

2014 has been a year of commemoration, admiration and remembrance for those lost generations who fought for our country's freedom. With the opening of the newly built Fallen Lifesavers memorial at Coogee Beach in April, followed by the commemorative service and plaque for the Boer War at Randwick cenotaph in May, in August we will mark one of the greatest historical events of the last century - the centenary of the commencement of First World War (WWI).

4000 residents of Randwick City served in WWI, many of them did not return home.

To pay our respects to this time in history and truly participate in worldwide commemorations, local churches and places of worship will, on Monday evening, 4 August 2014, at exactly 5:17pm, ring their church bells to a solemn beat throughout Randwick City.

At dusk, across our community, whether you're in La Perouse or Clovelly, together we will stop. We will come together, and we will remember the many who served for us, gave their lives for us, so that we could live with the privileges we do today.

I'd encourage everyone, young and old, to stop at 5:17pm so we can all take a few minutes to remember.
