A second Sydney international airport at Badgery's Creek will provide some relief for long-suffering residents of Sydney's east, says Randwick Mayor Scott Nash.

"Residents of Randwick City, along with neighbouring council areas, have put up with increasing aircraft noise from the Kingsford Smith Airport for some years now.

"A second Sydney airport is long overdue and I welcome the bipartisanship on this issue.  I am very pleased with the Federal Government's decision to invest in this significant new infrastructure for Sydney," Mayor Nash said.

Yesterday's announcement will see construction work on the $2.5 billion project begin in 2016, with billions of dollars and some 60,000 jobs expected to flow from the development by 2060.

"Following a recent Council resolution, I wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Infrastructure & Regional Development and the Premier of NSW indicating Randwick Council's support for a second Sydney airport at Badgery's Creek.

"I trust the decision announced yesterday to proceed with the Badgery's Creek Airport will take pressure off Kingsford Smith Airport, reduce the need for further intensification and result in no changes to the existing curfew," Mayor Nash said.
