Urban Design Awards open for nominations

Inspirational building design that enhances the urban environment of Randwick City will be instrumental to winning Randwick City Council's 2010 Urban Design Awards, which are now open for nominations.

Held every two years since 2004, the Urban Design Awards are open to registered architects who have been involved in an approved development project within the City of Randwick over the past five years.

The Mayor of Randwick, Cr John Procopiadis said the Urban Design Awards aim to promote and inspire outstanding urban design by recognising architects who enhance Randwick City's built environment.

"The outcomes of the development applications that come before us today are what will make up the streetscape tomorrow," said the Mayor.

"It's an important role of the Council to encourage creative, well thought-out design that takes into account the local environment and sustainable design elements."

This year, there are six categories in the Urban Design Awards, including:

  1. Single Dwelling Housing:for projects comprising detached, semi-detached or attached dwelling and dual occupancies.
  2. Multi-unit Housing
  3. Commercial / Mixed Use Development: for projects comprising retail and/or commercial uses that may include a residential component.
  4. Heritage: for projects relating to a heritage conservation area or a heritage listed building or structure under the Randwick LEP.
  5. Sustainability: for projects or public domain works that showcase Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) solutions and demonstrate how the quality of life for existing and future occupants has been improved.
  6. Public Buildings: for projects of a public or institutional nature such as churches, schools and buildings, predominantly for public use.

Three independent, expert judges will assess all entries and short list those which best meet the award criteria for each category.

Short listed entries will be on display at the Council's Administration Building and website by mid October for the public to view before voting on the People's Choice Award.

All entries must be submitted by 5pm Friday 24 September 2010 to Randwick City Council, 30 Frances Street, Randwick NSW 2031, or emailed to philip.north@randwick.nsw.gov.au.
