A major upgrade to one of Randwick City's most iconic surf life saving clubs - South Maroubra - is almost complete.
Under the Buildings for our Community Program, Council contributed $828,000 to restore and improve the building for volunteer lifesavers and the community.
Randwick Mayor Cr Scott Nash and South Maroubra Surf Club President Paul Fownes toured the site today.
"South Maroubra Surf Club is a popular and critical facility, on one of our most popular beaches. It's also the base for local lifesavers.
"It's important that we provide quality facilities for these dedicated people who so generously volunteer their time for the benefit and safety of people who live in Randwick City, and those many thousands who visit our spectacular coastline.
"These works involved re-roofing the top floor to protect the building from water damage and also installing a lift near the main entrance, ensuring the Surf Club is accessible to all people in our community, including those with a disability."
The six-month renovation also included a paint job, and extensive repair works. Internal stairs leading from the main foyer will be completed this month.
Funding for the project was provided by Council's Buildings for our Community Program, NSW Community Building Partnership Program, Surf Clubs NSW, Maroubra Seals Sports and Community Club and the Commonwealth Government's Accessible Communities Program.
