Work has begun on a new two-storey gym and fitness centre at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre in Heffron Park, Maroubra.
Demolition of the old buildings is complete and construction of the new family-friendly fitness centre, crèche and gym is underway.
The current indoor and outdoor pools will remain full operational during the works with a temporary entrance way constructed from the existing car park.
Works will take about 18 months to complete.
The Maroubra community helped improve the design of this centre during community consultation in 2011.
The design has been changed to include:
- more landscaping on Robey Street
- a new car park accessed from Jersey Rd
- an increased setback from the Robey Street kerb
- replacing eastern windows with a specially designed wall to let light in but protect privacy for neighbouring properties
- more family changerooms and showers
Who was Des Renford?
The new facility will be renamed from an aquatic centre to a leisure centre reflecting its expanded facilities, but will continue to honour Australian marathon swimmer Des Renford (1927-1999).
Des is best known for successfully crossing the English channel 19 times from 19 attempts earning him the title King of the Channel. He was heavily involved with the local community forming a coffee club to give swimmers of all abilities the chance to swim and meet over a cup of coffee. The former Heffron Pool was renamed in Des' honour in 2000.
