South Maroubra Beach is closed today due to dangerous surf conditions, with swell exceeding two metres.
Lifeguards will open a small section of Maroubra Beach for swimming, and will monitor the situation closely every 30 minutes.
Randwick Mayor Cr Scott Nash urged swimmers and anyone planning rock fishing to exercise extreme caution.
"I was down at South Maroubra visiting the newly upgraded Surf Club this morning and the surf is huge. If you are using the beach today, please take care, and follow any directions from our lifeguards," he said.
"The beach is clearly signposted, and Council's lifeguards have placed rescue equipment appropriately. Our lifeguards are well-trained to cope with emergency situations, but I hope that anybody using the beach today will use common sense and not put themselves at risk."
The surf is expected to peak tomorrow.
