New amenities building at Dunningham Reserve

Previous consultation

This community consultation is now closed. The information on this page is no longer current and is provided as a record of the consultation activities undertaken.

The existing toilet block in Dunningham Reserve is in extremely poor condition and below acceptable standards.

This is located in an area of significant natural beauty above Coogee Beach. The Council wants to replace this toilet block with amenities that demonstrate best practice in building design and use high quality robust building materials.

Features of the new design

This new building will be on the site of the existing toilet block. It will be a long horizontal pavilion in sympathy with the dominant horizontal ridge-line of the park behind.

Being located on the beach side of the Coastal Walkway minimises visual impact. No trees will need to be removed nor will there be the need for major excavations.

The building is broken into two parts with a wide opening in the centre, leading to a viewing deck with unencumbered views in both directions. This deck, linked to the Coastal Walkway, provides new viewing opportunities of the beach and ocean. A new stairway will link the deck and building to the beach.

There will be additional toilets for both men and women, with an outdoor shower. The design includes a small staff room for the Council's outdoor staff. The presence of Council staff will assist surveillance and maintenance of the building.

The amenities building, deck and link to the Coastal Walkway will be fully accessible for people with disabilities and parents with prams.

Robust materials, including stainless steel balustrades, precast concrete walls and a colourbond roof will be used and the internal finishes will have high quality tiling with stainless steel, vandal proof fittings.

Background

In 2006 the Council developed a design which was reported to Council and to the community, but this proved to be too expensive for the available budget. As a result Council decided to simplify the design. The new design is of a smaller building with a lower roof line but includes many elements of the earlier design.
