Recreation and leisure

The City of Randwick caters for everyone's recreation and leisure. Stunning beaches and ocean pools, linked by the Coastal Walk; parks for sports activities, children's playgrounds, riding your bike  or exercising your dog. Parks where you can have a barbeque or enjoy a spectacular view of the ocean. Our aquatic centre has a range of pools and activities for different needs. If you want to visit a community centre, hire a hall or an open space, we have a wide variety of venues.

Council's Public Place Officers monitor the parks, playgrounds, roads, footpaths and street furniture and report on their condition and appearance. Council is working to make its public places as accessible as possible for people with mobility problems. Footpath ramps are being constructed, and Clovelly Beach has an access ramp on the northern side of the beach.

Recreation Needs Study

Randwick City Council recently adopted a Recreation Needs Study Final Report  Jun08 (pdf 3.99Mb) that looked at the needs and opportunities for sports and leisure in Randwick City.

The study includes a 10-year strategy implementation plan with key objectives. The objectives will guide Council's planning, improvements and the maintenance of parks, reserves, sports grounds and recreation facilities.

Council consulted residents, sporting groups and key stakeholders when preparing the draft recreation needs study.

The study:

  • reviews Randwick City's current demographic characteristics and future population growth
  • analyses the impact these have on recreation provision
  • identifies current and likely trends in recreational activities
  • assesses how Council should respond to these trends
  • provides a summary of existing open space provision with a hierarchical classification of parks and their uses
  • reviews the quality of open space including uses, shade, landscaping and maintenance standards
  • reviews the existing provision of passive and active recreation facilities.
