Protect your pets from loud noises

Many dogs and cats are terrified by the loud noise that thunderstorms and firework displays generate. They think this noise emanates from the yard they're confined in and as a result, they escape (or try to). Council rangers then hear from frantic pet owners looking for their missing pets. Sadly, not many dogs or cats have road sense so it's just good luck if an escaped animal makes it home without injuries.

When it's noisy outside, please think of your pets and let them stay in a safe, secure indoor area - without glass. Also, make sure your dog or cat is microchipped and registered or always wears a collar containing your contact details, so that if they do get out they can be returned quickly and easily.

All kittens, puppies, cats and dogs must be microchipped by the age of 12 weeks and registered at the age of six months.

Responsible dog owners exercise their dogs regularly and clean up any droppings. Areas where dogs can be exercised are listed here.

If your dog is found off its leash in a public place, it can seized by council officers and taken to the pound.

If your dog barks repeatedly, damages other people's property or chases people, animals or vehicles, Council can issue a Nuisance Order. If your dog continues in this manner you can be fined up to $550 for the first offence. Restricted and dangerous dogs can only be kept under controlled circumstances.

Local children are learning about responsible pet ownership and safety around animals by participating in the Pets and People Education Program (PetPEP) , a national education program developed by vets and run locally by Randwick City Council.

If you are thinking about adopting a dog or a cat, make sure you visit the The Sydney Dogs And Cats Home. The Sydney Dogs And Cats Home has a variety of programs and animals that can suit all needs, including adopting a pet permanently, becoming a pet foster parent and even volunteering at the animal shelter.
