The word 'Maroubra' comes from an indigenous word meaning 'like thunder', an apt description of the sound of the waves pounding on the shoreline. These waves have made Maroubra one of the most popular surfing locations in Sydney. The beach is serviced by two surf life saving clubs and is regularly patrolled by lifeguards throughout the year.

The Maroubra Skate Park and innovative children's playground are adjacent.

On Sunday 19 March 2006, Maroubra Beach was dedicated as Australia's second only National Surfing Reserve (after Bells Beach in 1973) and the first ever in NSW: Maroubra Beach National Surfing Reserve (pdf 1497 kb).

The Maroubra Beach Plan of Management details the existing environment, the history, heritage and recreational uses of the area, and outlines the management strategies and priorities for the beach. Copies of the Plan of Management are available for purchase at a cost of $20. Contact us.
