to meet their own needs.' Our Common Future The World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987

The principles of ecologically sustainable development are built into the Local Government Act 1993, which requires all councils to follow those principles to properly manage, develop, protect, restore, enhance and conserve the environment of the area for which they are responsible.
Randwick City Council has already implemented many ecologically sustainable development projects, such as:
- A 140,000 underground stormwater reuse system at Council's Community Nursery at Kingsford. A demonstration photovoltaic (solar panel) system on the roof of the Randwick Council depot, Maroubra
- Encouraging residents to save water in their home through our Rainwater tank factsheet and Greywater fact sheet
Council is making all of its facilities and activities more sustainable, and implementing ecologically sustainable development across all areas. We have built ecologically sustainable development principles into the City Plan:
- recognising that a 'sustainable city' meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own environmental, economic and social needs.
- showing leadership to demonstrate 'best practice'.
- working towards protecting, enhancing and promoting our natural environment for future generations.
- working with our community to be a more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable City.
- promoting sustainable design practices and activities.
