Randwick City Council operates a comprehensive waste collection and recycling service for all residents, businesses and visitors. This service includes:
- Household garbage and recycling collection
- Green waste collection and mulching
- Public place litter bin collection, footpath cleaning and street sweeping
- Commercial or trade waste bin collection, including a cardboard/paper recycling collection service
- Scheduled clean-up days, on-call clean-up and special paid services for bulky items and larger-than-bin quantities of household waste
- Specific drop-off sites, providing community members with a convenient way to dispose of additional recycling and green waste
- Illegal dumping control, through spotting, investigation, legal enforcement and collection
- Other waste services, including the disposal of hazardous waste, chemical waste, medical waste, building/renovation waste and electronic waste (e-waste)
- Waste Management Plan Guidelines are available for download from the Development Applications page.
All councils must provide domestic waste services, and a domestic waste levy is included in the rates notice for this purpose. Council does not make any money on its waste collection and recycling services.
At this stage, collection/disposal costs for recyclable materials are higher than the cost for general garbage, on a per tonnage basis. It is only through the continuing improvement of recycling technology, greater resident participation and less recycling bin contamination that this cost gap can be reduced.
