The 2011 school excursion program is brought to you by Randwick City Council and is supported by the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund.

Experience the new sustainability displays and features at the Randwick Community Centre.

The Water Wise Trail

Using interpretive signage and interactive displays, the Water Wise Trail demonstrates water wise features at the Randwick Community Centre and Permaculture Interpretive Garden.

You will find:

  • a sustainable kitchen with water efficient display and dishwasher
  • a range of rainwater tanks that feed rainwater into our toilets and irrigate the permaculture garden-this reduces reliance on town water
  • water wise irrigation features in the Permaculture Interpretive Garden
  • native, low water requirement garden in the Permaculture garden
  • Randwick Environment Park, which includes remnant Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub and wetland. There is an adjacent display illustrating catchment management and stormwater management issues.

The Energy Wise Trail

Interpretive signage is used around the Centre to describe the installed energy efficient technologies featured at the site.

You will find:

  • energy supply systems-2.4kW wind turbine, 2.1kW photovoltaic solar panel, solar hot water system
  • passive design system-awnings, louvre window ventilation for cooling, retrofitting for the use of natural light including skylights,
  • active design system-fans for heating and cooling, gas heating, energy efficient appliances.

The Permaculture Interpretive Garden

The garden has been designed to show many sustainable gardening features. These features are demonstrated using interpretive signage and interactive displays.

You will find:

  • a range of raised vegie beds
  • the beginnings of our food forest
  • a rain garden that is hooked up to the rainwater tank stormwater overflow
  • the compost and wormfarm demonstration area
  • small space garden displays for courtyards and balconies
  • native garden including frog pond and lizard lounge.
