The Council Nursery aims to promote the use of indigenous plant species throughout the eastern suburbs.
Indigenous plant species are those found within the Randwick Local Government Area and throughout the Eastern Suburbs prior to European settlement. The term 'local provenance' is applied to these species.
Planting indigenous plants in Council's parks, reserves and private gardens provides habitat for native bird and insect species, assists in the conservation of our local species and ensures higher plant survival rates as they have evolved to cope with local soil and climatic conditions.
Indigenous plants are identified throughout the nursery by a BLUE tag. The information on this tag, includes the plant species name, when the plant was propagated and the local provenance of the seed.
Non-indigenous plants
Council's Community Nursery also grows a range of native plants from throughout Australia and other assorted exotic species.
These plant species have also been selected because they tolerate the harsh climatic conditions and poor sandy soils of the Eastern Suburbs, and are not likely to become environmental weeds.
