It is important to us that we make all new employees of Council feel welcome and comfortable in their new role, provide them with an environment that helps them to perform at their best and ensure a smooth transition so they are well informed about the organisation from the outset.
To do this we have developed several structured activities spread out over the first 3 months of employment that all new employees are required to participate in regardless of the position they hold.
First day
You will begin your first day in our corporate induction which gives a brief overview of the organisation and outlines the corporate obligations of Council employees. Included in the day will be several online learning activities and informal activities based around Occupational Health and Safety and Council's Code of Conduct.
First week
Department specific inductions will be conducted during your first week in your new team by your Manager or Supervisor.
First month
Within your first month you will be invited to the half day monthly induction where you will meet our management team in a casual and relaxed environment, participate in manual handling training and be taken on a tour of our City. The tour will help you to appreciate the size and diversity of our Community and the departments of Council and the services that we provide.
Ongoing feedback
On a monthly basis your manager or supervisor will have discussions with you to provide feedback on:
- what you are doing well
- where you can improve, and
- any problems or concerns you may have about your new role.
This is also an opportunity for you to clarify the requirements of your position and to identify training needs that will be beneficial to you in your role.
Third month
As you near the completion of your 3 month probation period your final probation discussion with your manager or supervisor will be held. This will be much the same as the monthly discussions that you have been having but, assuming there have been no problems, you will also develop a learning and development plan for the upcoming year.
If you have been successful in passing your probation period your ongoing employment will be confirmed by the General Manager.
