Chifley

The suburb of Chifley is located in the south of Randwick City and is bounded by Anzac Parade to the east and Bunnerong Road to the west. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Matraville to the west, Malabar to the east and Little Bay to the south. Two schools are located in the north of the suburb (Chifley Public School and Matraville Sports High School). The suburb also includes the regional sporting facility, the Women's Athletic Field. Housing in Chifley is predominantly a low density (such as single houses semi-detached) with pockets of medium-density housing located in the south.

A small neighbourhood shopping centre is located in the central part of the suburb, adjacent to Walters Park. Larger shopping centres are located in Matraville and Maroubra Junction to the north. Bus services operate along Anzac Parade and Bunnerong Road and are the only form of public transport available to the suburb.

Chifley has a high proportion of families and children and fewer young people and more 45 to 54 year olds and people over 70 years compared to Randwick City. People tend to own, or were purchasing, their own homes, which are mostly separate houses rather than flats or units.

History of Chifley

Bunnerong House was the first house built in the area in 1825. Most of the land was owned by the Crown and during the depression land was leased to potential home owners who built their own homes progressively.

The suburb of Chifley was named after Joseph Benedict Chifley, the Prime Minister of Australia at the end of the Second World War. Randwick Council named it as a suburb in 1964. A large public housing complex, comprising four- and five-storey buildings and smaller buildings housing bedsitters, was constructed in the south of the suburb in the 1960s.
