Safety around dogs
Even very young children need to be taught basic safety around dogs:
  • don't run near dogs as this will excite them
  • don't pat dogs that are eating
  • don't approach a strange dog
  • don't stare at a dog.

Dogs that aren't used to being around children can find a child's size, uncoordinated movements and playful gestures challenging or even threatening. They may not associate the child with adult humans, and therefore not realise that the same behaviour is expected of them.

More information on restricted and dangerous dogs, dog attacks and fines and penalties can be found from the list in the left hand column.
