Services for people from diverse backgrounds

Randwick City is home to more than 104 different national or ethnic groups.

Council has developed a Cultural Diversity Policy which is designed to improve the participation of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in Local Government issues. The Multicultural Advisory Committee develops and implements policies to assist this participation.

Council also coordinates a number of community events, and has trained a number of council staff to act as Language aides.

Multicultural Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Randwick City Council Multicultural Advisory Committee is to provide an opportunity for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to discuss and make recommendations to Council on multicultural issues, and on how to improve access to services.

The committee meets on a bimonthly basis at Bowen Library in Maroubra.

Language aides

In order to assist the needs of residents who have English as a second language, a number of Council staff have been trained as language aides to provide assistance to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Council also has access to the Telephone Interpreter Service (TIS).

Council maintains close links with Sydney Multicultural Community Services which assists newly arrived immigrants.
